Hikers are gross. Deodorant, daily showers, and fresh undies all stay home during a thru-hike. This episode delves deeper than maybe we needed to know into hiker hygiene. TMI, you might say. Special guests Popsicle, Nettle, Briar, and Seahawk.
We have a new instagram account, so if you’re interested in seeing what our contributors, interviewees, or just the scenery looks like, check us out @soundsofthetrail, or here.
A couple listeners notified us last week that we were having some technical issues with our iTunes/Stitcher/RSS feed. Thanks for the heads up! I think we have it resolved.

July 27, 2015 at 6:45 amI think this has been one of my favorite episodes so far!! It’s full of information you really WANT to know but don’t want to ask. I’m a 44 year old woman and loved that one of the women interviewed was 47. While I love the podcast, I always feel like such an “old” person listening in on young kids have these great adventures. I feel much better now and I hope more “old” women get out on the trail. Keep up the great work!!!

March 7, 2016 at 10:43 pmYep, I’m 52! I don’t always notice the gap because I don’t have kids, but sometimes I still think “heck, they could be MY kids!” haha But we’re all hikers, so I guess that’s all that counts. π

August 5, 2015 at 8:45 amFantastic episode. You all are doing a great job, especially given the challenges faced by your contributors. Please keep up the great work. I’m hiking vicariously through each of you!

August 10, 2015 at 11:23 amThanks Aaron. Podcasting turns out to have as many ups and downs as thru-hiking – at least when all your contributors are thru-hikers, haha.

August 30, 2015 at 6:15 pmI agree with Renee. It is refreshing to hear from someone who isn’t a twenty something.
I am fairly new to backpacking. I started in my 40’s and listening to Popsicle made me that it was possible to do a thru hike. Like she said though trying to find people my age that like backpacking. I have friends who hike but they need a real meal and bed.
I live in Wisconsin and wonder if I can get sufficient training in??
Thank you for having this podcast. I look forward to listening to it. You have great contributors.

February 22, 2016 at 4:09 pmLadies, as a post menopausal woman (I’m 60), backpacking just gets better. No periods, no hormonal fluctuations, and leg and pit hair stops growing. So, stay healthy, don’t stop hiking, and be a future old lady on the trail.
Also, I have a minimal hygiene bag, but I always carry a broad spectrum antibiotic, and a small packet of antibacterial cream. Remember, some infections can kill you.
Something I didn’t hear was the proper LNT practice of packing out your toilet paper. I use a quart freezer bag to carry out soiled TP. It’s thicker and sturdier than a sandwich bag.
And, finding a pee/poop spot with a beautiful view, is a pretty amazing thing.

February 23, 2016 at 4:07 pmPacking out TP is only my favorite LNT issue! Check out episode 11 π I prefer a plastic grocery sack myself – it’s opaque. Quick knot in the top and stored in the ziploc with my trowel, hand sanitzer, and (unused) TP.

March 7, 2016 at 10:52 pmYES! I’m 52 and postmenopausal, too, so at least the monthly issue is done. WOOHOO. For those who still need products, though, I absolutely agree with Gizmo about the Diva Cup – fabulous! Anyway, I’ve always valued freedom and happiness over age and so-called ‘maturity’, so you’ll find me on the trail no matter what! π

March 11, 2016 at 8:32 amI really enjoyed the TMI episode also. I don’t need someone to tell me how to enjoy a sunset, but I can use practical tips on how to poop in the woods. I am 62. My husband and I are day-hikers. I have to say I am rather surprised at how Kimshi so carefully, delicately and uncomfortably approached the topic of menstruation. I thought that sort of silliness died away with my mother’s generation. You can be more matter-of-fact about it than that. (Otherwise I think Kimshi does a terrific job!) I did like Gizmo’s comments about the Diva Cup. Almost made me wish I still menstruated so I could try one.
